Stones and Flies: Richard Long in the Sahara

Directed by Philip Haas

Release: 1988
Runtime: 38
Country: U.S.
Language: English

Sir Richard Julian Long is a British land artist who's turned far-flung landscapes from the Australian brush to the glaciers of Iceland into his canvas. Before director Philip Haas (Kings of the Water, The World of Gilbert & George), no filmmaker was allowed to accompany him on his walks, long-reaching journeys Long makes through desert and tundra to find the location for his next tapestry. In STONES AND FLIES, Haas follows Long across Algeria’s Hoggar, a volcanic region of the Sahara Desert. By focusing on his preoccupation with the interchangeability of movement and art, Haas manages to capture what Long sees in Mother Earth as he gives shape and form to a place that, to the uninitiated, seems featureless. Long's earthworks, stone sculptures, and sand designs are amazing to behold like never before this release on home video.
