Mona Lisa is Missing

Directed by Joe Medeiros

Release: 2012
Runtime: 85
Country: U.S., U.K., Italy, France
Language: English

On August 21,1911, the Mona Lisa was stolen. No one knows how or why...until now. How did an unassuming house painter from Italy pull off the greatest art heist of modern time? Writer and director Joe Medeiros attempts to answer that question by profiling Vincenzo Peruggia, the painter in question, using historical photographs, animation and interviews with Peruggia's descendants. In doing so, he discovers why and how the man nicknamed "Macaroni" by his French co-workers absconded with the legendary painting and hid it for a whole two years. This riveting, often humorous documentary portrays a man struggling to find his way in the world and make his family proud, along with the surprising story of an estranged daughter and a country recovering from old wounds.
